Ukrainian Sea Drones Sink Sanctioned Russian Container Ship 'Janina' in Black Sea
The Russian container ship 'Janina', owned by state nuclear agency Rosatom, sank in the Black Sea after being attacked by two Ukrainian sea drones. All 17 crew members were rescued.
Both Russian and Ukrainian sides have confirmed that the Russian container ship 'Janina', which was under sanctions, sank in the Black Sea after an attack by two sea drones. Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev said on August 1 that the vessel, owned by Russia's state nuclear energy agency, went down about 130 nautical miles from Novorossiysk.
Likhachev said the ship was in international waters and carried civilian cargo, from frozen food to construction materials. He described the attack as piracy and sea robbery.
All 17 crew members were rescued. Sixteen sailors were taken off the ship during the night by the crew of the vessel 'Delphinus', and the remaining one was found in the morning by Russian Black Sea Fleet aviation.
The container ship 'FESCO Janina' joined the fleet in September 2021. The vessel measures 142 meters in length, 22 meters in width, and has a capacity of 962 containers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strike, stressing that the ship was on the sanctions list. He also published a video of the attack and noted that the vessel, with a displacement of more than 100,000 tonnes, had sunk.
