For Ukrainian children far from home, independence carries deeply personal meaning

Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of its independence this year, a date many see as a simple holiday, but for children displaced by the war it carries a far more personal significance.

Ukraine this year marks the 35th anniversary of its independence. For much of society, the date remains an annual holiday — a mark on the calendar symbolizing the country's historical path since regaining independence.

Yet the day does not mean the same thing to everyone. For children forced by the war to leave their homes and their country, the concept of independence has taken on a much deeper and more personal meaning. For them, it is no longer just an abstract historical milestone, but something tied to their own lived experience — the loss of a familiar home, disrupted daily life, and hope for return.

These children will mark Independence Day while far from their homeland, including in Latvia. Their perspective on the holiday differs from that of adults, or of people whom the war has not forced to flee. For these children, events connected to their country's independence and its defense have become part of their own personal story, not merely a chapter in a history book.

This experience highlights how differently the same holiday can be felt by different generations and by people who have ended up in different circumstances. While for part of society Independence Day remains a symbolic marker in the yearly calendar, for children affected by the war it is closely tied to their own fate and identity.

As this anniversary approaches, attention turns to the experience of these children — Ukrainians far from home — and how they understand the idea of their country's independence while the war continues.
