Ukraine has captured foreign soldiers from 51 countries fighting for Russia, ombudsman says

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said on Tuesday that Ukrainian authorities are holding foreign soldiers who fought with the Russian armed forces. According to Lubinets, the prisoners come from 51 countries. He made the statement about foreign troops on Russia’s side.

Lubinets stressed that the captured individuals served in the Russian army. The ombudsman did not specify which countries are represented or give the total number of prisoners. The figure of 51 countries nevertheless indicates that a wide range of nations have citizens among those who fought for Russia and were taken prisoner.

The announcement confirms that the ranks of Russian forces include nationals from many states. It also shows that foreign fighters captured by Ukraine come from various parts of the world. Further details about the captives’ identities and home countries have not yet been made public.
