Mykhailo Tkach, head of the investigative journalism department at the Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, has publicly described how he and his cameraman were detained in Vienna, the capital of Austria. The account concerns the treatment of journalists working abroad during a detention.

According to Tkach, armed people wearing masks smashed the windows of the vehicle he was in. They then pulled him and camera operator Yaroslav Bondarenko out onto the road.

Tkach said that one of the men put a knee on his neck. At that moment he was repeating that he was a journalist.

The headline of the Ukrainska Pravda report carries a phrase attributed to Tkach: "We were detained like terrorists." It reflects how he characterises the manner of the detention.

What is known

The details come from Tkach's own account, as relayed by his outlet. The report does not state which agency the armed individuals represented, what grounds were given for the detention, or how long it lasted. It also contains no comment from Austrian authorities.

Ukrainska Pravda is one of Ukraine's online news publications, and its investigations department is led by Tkach. Further clarification of the circumstances would depend on statements from the parties involved.
