Ukraine sinks Russian container ship and hits three oil refineries, Zelenskyy says
Ukrainian forces have sunk the sanctioned Russian container ship Yanina and struck infrastructure at three oil refineries in Bashkortostan, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that Ukrainian forces sank the Russian container ship Yanina, which was sailing under the Russian flag and had a capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes. The vessel sank after being hit.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces also carried out targeted strikes in the waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. In addition, units of the Security Service of Ukraine attacked infrastructure at three Russian oil refineries in Bashkortostan, located nearly 1,600 kilometres from Ukraine.
According to Zelenskyy, these refineries process millions of tonnes of oil annually. The attacks are part of Ukraine's broader efforts to weaken Russia's military and economic potential.
The president did not provide further operational details. The events demonstrate Ukraine's ability to strike deep inside Russian territory and at sea, despite the considerable distance involved.
