Elections after the war in Ukraine: voting rights for millions of refugees

While Latvia is already actively discussing the upcoming Saeima elections, party programs, and political alignments, the situation in Ukraine looks completely different. The war has changed not only the present but also the very perception of the future: long-term planning has become almost impossible, and the issue of elections has been pushed far into the background.

However, sooner or later they will take place. Already today, Ukraine must solve a difficult task: how to secure voting rights for millions of citizens who have left the country because of the war. This problem is particularly pressing given the large number of refugees who have sought shelter in Europe and elsewhere.

According to Alexei Zarichansky, the author's viewpoint, Ukrainian authorities will have to find solutions so that these people can participate in the country's political life. Otherwise, there is a risk that a large part of society will be excluded from the decision-making process.
