Ukraine has gained representation on a United Nations human rights body for the first time, as Ukrainian national Anton Symkovych was elected to the UN Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture.

His term will run from 2027 to 2030, following a first-round vote in which Ukraine's candidate received support from 60 countries. Diplomat Melnyk announced the result, describing it as a significant milestone for Ukraine's participation in international human rights oversight mechanisms.

The subcommittee is a UN body tasked with monitoring the prevention of torture and ill-treatment in member states, including through visits to places of detention and issuing recommendations to national authorities.
