Uman to introduce movement restrictions from September 4-17 for Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage
Ukraine's city of Uman will impose a special entry, exit and movement regime from September 4 to 17 due to the annual Hasidic pilgrimage for the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. The measures mirror those applied in previous years.
The city of Uman in Ukraine's Cherkasy region will introduce a special traffic regime from September 4 to 17, coinciding with the annual pilgrimage of Hasidic Jews celebrating Rosh Hashanah. Ihor Taburets, head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, announced the measures on Telegram, noting they would follow the same pattern as in previous years.
Restriction details
Movement from the M-05 Kyiv-Odesa highway toward Uman's Vyzvolyteliv Street will be permitted only for Hasidic pilgrims. Vehicle entry into the city will be fully banned along several routes: from the M-30 highway to Derevianka Street near the "Standart Budivelnyi" LLC base, from the M-30 to Horikhova Street, and from the village of Rodnykivka to Pavlova Street.
Enhanced checkpoint controls will operate at several other locations, including entry from the M-30 onto Derevianka and Mykhailivska streets, from the M-05 onto Yednannia Street, at the intersection of Horodetska and Maksyma Zalizniaka streets in the village of Horodetske, and at entry from Rodnykivka onto Kyivska Street.
Taburets also stressed that within the pilgrimage area, the sale of alcoholic beverages, fireworks, pyrotechnics, knives and other sharp or cutting objects, as well as air guns and their imitations, will be prohibited.
Background
Every autumn, Uman becomes a gathering point for thousands of Hasidic pilgrims celebrating the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. In 2025, more than 35,000 Hasidim traveled to Uman for the celebration.
