Polish tourist bus crashes in Hungary, 12 killed

A Polish-registered tourist bus overturned on Hungary's M3 motorway, killing 12 people and injuring at least 10. Police say the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

A tourist bus carrying Polish license plates crashed in Hungary overnight into August 16, leaving 12 people dead and at least 10 injured. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced the news on Facebook.

The bus was traveling on the M3 motorway toward Nyíregyháza when it suddenly veered off the straight road, went into a ditch and overturned, according to the outlet Yevropeiska Pravda.

Driver reportedly fell asleep

According to preliminary information from Hungarian police, the driver is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel. He has been detained, and authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Law enforcement officials said the tourist bus was carrying 57 passengers along with two drivers. Twelve people died in the crash, while several others were injured and are receiving medical treatment.

Police in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county are currently carrying out rescue operations at the scene and investigating the accident further.

Hungary's prime minister offered condolences to the families of the victims and thanked the emergency services involved in the response.
