At least 12 dead after Polish tourist bus overturns in Hungary
A Polish tourist coach overturned into a ditch on Hungary's M3 motorway early Sunday, killing at least 12 people and seriously injuring more than ten others.
Early Sunday morning, a coach carrying Polish tourists overturned on the M3 motorway in northeastern Hungary, between the towns of Mezőkeresztes and Mezőnagymihály, according to Hungarian authorities.
Rescue units already present at the scene broke through the coach's windows to free passengers trapped inside. By around 3 a.m., firefighters had rescued 35 people from the vehicle, while several others remained trapped underneath it.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar confirmed on social media that 12 people had died in the crash and at least ten had been seriously injured overnight. He offered condolences to the victims' families, wished the injured a swift recovery, and thanked those involved in the rescue operation.
Poland's foreign minister confirmed the disaster, saying his ministry remained in constant contact with Hungarian authorities, though full details were still being confirmed. Polish President Karol Nawrocki also expressed condolences, saying he joined in prayer for the victims' families and loved ones.
Hungarian Interior Minister Gábor Pósfai said 47 people had been travelling on the coach, several of whom were seriously injured. He added that the driver of the vehicle had been taken into custody.
