Polish tourist bus crashes in Hungary, fatalities reported

A Polish tourist bus carrying 57 passengers ran off the road in Hungary overnight, leaving several people dead and dozens injured. Police believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

A serious road accident occurred in Hungary around 1 a.m. local time, involving a tourist bus from Poland. According to the initial version from Hungarian police, the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel. The driver has been detained.

The rescue operation was extensive, as people were trapped beneath the 24-tonne vehicle. Emergency crews initially attempted to lift the rear axle of the bus to free those trapped underneath, while cranes were called to the scene to eventually lift the entire vehicle.

Casualties

So far, rescuers have freed 35 of the bus's 57 passengers, along with both drivers. Hungary's emergency medical service reported treating one person with life-threatening injuries, nine people with serious injuries, and 37 others with minor injuries. The crash also resulted in fatalities, though an exact death toll was not specified.

Prime minister's response

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery.
