Hungary and Germany reach Basketball World Cup quarter-finals

Hungary and Germany are the first teams to advance to the quarter-finals at the women's Basketball World Cup in Berlin. Both sides won their round-of-16 games by comfortable margins.

Hungary defeated Japan 84:63. The first quarter ended 20:12 in Hungary's favour, Japan responded in the second by winning it 22:17, but Hungary regained control and took the next two quarters 21:11 and 26:18. Reka Lelika led the winners with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Viraga Takaca-Kisa added 17 points and eight rebounds. Kokoro Tanaka was Japan's top scorer with 11 points.

Germany were even more dominant, routing South Korea 94:56. Germany won every quarter, with scores of 23:14, 23:15, 22:11 and 26:16. Marie Giliha had 19 points and five rebounds, Frieda Bunere scored 17 points and collected five rebounds, and Luiza Geizelsedere contributed 12 points. For South Korea, Herana Li scored 21 points and Liseula Ganga added 17.

In the quarter-finals, Hungary will face the United States, while Germany will meet Belgium. The remaining round-of-16 games are scheduled for Wednesday, with Puerto Rico playing China and Italy taking on Australia. All four group winners had already advanced to the quarter-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams had to play in the round of 16. The World Cup in Berlin will conclude on Sunday. At the previous tournament in 2022, the United States became champions by beating China in the final, while Australia took the bronze medal.
