Hungarian Parliament Passes Constitutional Amendments to End Term of Orbán-Loyal President

Hungary's parliament approved constitutional amendments that immediately terminate the presidency of Tamás Sulyok, an ally of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. If Sulyok does not sign the amendments within five days, an impeachment process will begin.

The Hungarian parliament on Monday passed constitutional amendments that end the term of President Tamás Sulyok, who is considered loyal to former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Sulyok was elected president in 2024 with support from Orbán's Fidesz party.

The amendments were approved with 139 votes in favor and six against, while Fidesz lawmakers boycotted the vote. Current Prime Minister Péter Magyar, whose center-right Tisza party holds a two-thirds majority, said that these amendments complete the constitutional reform of the Orbán regime.

Magyar stated that Sulyok has five days to either resign or sign the amendments. If he refuses, Tisza will initiate impeachment proceedings. Although the president cannot veto constitutional amendments, a refusal could lead to a constitutional crisis.

The amendments also introduce a 12-year term limit for lawmakers, preventing several prominent opposition politicians from running again. In June, parliament already passed a limit restricting prime ministers to two four-year terms, blocking Orbán's potential return. Magyar has promised to draft a completely new constitution.
