Hungary's Halász wins Euro gold with national record in hammer throw, season leader Choinard falters
Hungarian Bence Halász won European Championship gold in the men's hammer throw with a national record of 84.25 metres, while season leader Jean Choinard of France failed to even reach the final six-throw round.
Hungary's Bence Halász claimed victory in the men's hammer throw at the European Championships with an outstanding fifth-round effort of 84.25 metres. The throw earned him not only the gold medal but also a new personal and national record, as well as the best result of the season.
No other competitor came close to challenging Halász for the title. Germany's Merlin Hummel took silver with a throw of 81.30 metres, also achieved in his fifth attempt. Ukraine's Mykhailo Kokhan secured bronze, with his best throw of 79.49 metres coming on his fifth try. Hummel and Halász were the only two athletes to clear the 80-metre mark.
Choinard's setback
The competition's biggest surprise came from season leader Jean Choinard of France, who suffered an unwelcome upset. After failing to register a valid throw in his first two attempts, his third-round throw reached only 76.19 metres. This result left him in ninth place, denying him the chance to compete for a medal, as he did not advance to the final three throws reserved for the top eight finishers.
