USB-C hub or docking station: how to pick the right one
Laptop users short on ports now have two main options — docking stations and USB-C hubs — each with distinct strengths and limitations. The right choice depends on what devices you need to connect and how often you're on the move.
For laptop owners whose built-in ports fall short of their needs, two main solutions exist on the market: docking stations and USB-C hubs. While both help organize a workspace and add connectivity, the two differ in important ways.
Size and power
Docking stations tend to be larger and offer more ports, built for permanently transforming a desk setup. USB-C hubs, by contrast, are smaller, lighter, and better suited to on-the-go use. A key difference lies in power supply: docking stations typically plug directly into a wall outlet and can power connected devices, while hubs generally draw power from the laptop they're plugged into. Some hubs support power delivery passthrough for charging accessories, but without specialized hardware this tends to be slow.
Common hub limitations
Because USB-C hubs usually rely on the host laptop's power and split its available bandwidth, they can't always handle demanding peripherals well. External hard drives, especially SSDs, may struggle to get enough power and bandwidth, while high-speed devices like HD webcams or external GPUs generally won't work properly through a hub at all. This bandwidth limitation is also why most USB-C hubs can only support a single external monitor.
Being designed for portability, hubs are also more exposed to wear and tear — debris buildup and drop damage — than a stationary dock, which can shorten their lifespan depending on how they're used.
Despite these limitations, USB-C hubs remain a solid choice for users who need extra ports without connecting heavy-duty peripherals, and their portability gives them a clear advantage over docking stations for anyone not planning to plug in numerous demanding devices.
