Utilitas begins construction of wind and storage power plant in Valmiera
Energy company Utilitas has launched the construction of a wind and battery storage power plant in Valmiera, Latvia, expected to generate around 330 GWh annually and supply 110,000 households. The facility is scheduled to become operational in early 2028.
The company Utilitas has started building a new energy facility in Latvia, combining wind power generation and electricity storage in the Valmiera area. The project includes a 117 MW wind farm and a 60 MW battery storage system, located near the Latvian-Estonian border.
The installation will feature 18 modern wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6.5 MW. The battery storage will have a power rating of 60 MW and a storage capacity of 240 MWh. According to current plans, the combined facility is expected to produce approximately 330 GWh of electricity per year, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of about 110,000 households.
The new power plant will be connected to the existing 330 kV Estonian-Latvian transmission line. The battery system is intended to provide grid balancing services across all three Baltic states.
Financing for the project has been arranged with the support of several banks, including SEB, Swedbank, and OP Corporate Bank. The plant is scheduled to begin operations at the start of 2028.
