A total of 61 cases of infrastructure damage have been recorded this year on the border between Latvia and Belarus. For comparison, there were 23 such cases during the whole of last year, according to a report by the TV3 news programme.

As reported, the offenders damage surveillance cameras and cut the border fence. In this way they try to help illegal migrants get into Latvian territory.

When the offenders notice border guards or soldiers, they retreat back into Belarusian territory. Video of the incident has also been published, showing the damage and the escape.

According to the headline of the original publication, the State Border Guard, which is responsible for protecting Latvia's border, is proposing to widen the rights to use weapons. The short excerpt available does not specify which changes are being proposed.
