Germany's AfD scores landmark win in Saxony-Anhalt, leaving Merz without answers

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) recorded a landslide result in Sunday's regional election in Saxony-Anhalt, marking its most significant electoral achievement to date and bringing the party closer than ever to holding genuine governing power in a German state for the first time since World War II. The party is described as anti-immigrant and pro-Russian in orientation.

The outcome poses a serious challenge for Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Even before the vote, it was clear Merz's political standing would suffer regardless of the result: an outright AfD win would signal the party's growing dominance, while a CDU-led coalition with left-wing parties to keep the AfD out of power would create its own messy political fallout.

A radical figure gains ground

Particular attention is being paid to AfD's regional leader Hans-Thomas Tillschneider, described as a figure pushing Germans to move past the country's Nazi history. Should the AfD's regional strength solidify, Tillschneider could end up wielding more influence than any other far-right figure in Germany's postwar history, giving him a platform to translate his radical views into actual policy.

Merz's reform strategy falls short

Ahead of the election, Merz had sought to present himself as a reformer, pushing through a series of incremental changes intended to curb the AfD's rising popularity. Judging by the election result, however, this approach has failed to produce the decisive political turning point needed to halt the far right's continued advance in German politics.
