Explosion near German train station in Augsburg injures two Ukrainians
Two Ukrainian citizens were injured in an explosion near the main railway station in Augsburg, Germany, in the early hours of September 2. A second suspicious item found at the station hours later turned out to be harmless.
An explosion near the main railway station in the German city of Augsburg injured two Ukrainian citizens — a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old young man — in the early hours of September 2, Bavarian police reported.
According to law enforcement, the blast occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Bahnhofstrasse, when an unidentified object detonated in a passage between buildings of a commercial and office complex. Both Ukrainians suffered minor physical injuries along with acoustic barotrauma. Police said the pair were bystanders who happened to be at the scene by chance.
The blast wave also damaged the facades and shop windows of nearby buildings, including a jewelry store, a bank branch and a household chemicals shop. Investigators are working to determine the type of explosive device used and are examining all possible scenarios, including the possibility of a criminal dispute.
Second scare at the station
Later the same day, around 8:30 a.m., another suspicious object was discovered in a pedestrian tunnel at the main station. Police evacuated the station and completely halted rail traffic. After bringing in a dog trained to detect explosives along with specialists from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, authorities determined the object posed no danger.
Previous attacks on Ukrainians in Germany
The incident follows a series of earlier attacks on Ukrainians in Germany. In February 2024, a group of teenagers attacked Ukrainian basketball players with knives in Oberhausen, killing 17-year-old Volodymyr Yermakov and 18-year-old Artem Kozachenko. In April 2024, in the town of Murnau, a Russian national attacked two Ukrainian servicemen with a knife at a shopping center where they were undergoing rehabilitation; both died from their wounds. On March 7, 2025, a regional court in Munich sentenced a 58-year-old Russian man to life in prison for killing the two Ukrainian servicemen.
