Drone wreckage found near Wunstorf military airfield close to Hanover, Germany
Wreckage from a crashed drone was discovered near Lake Steinhude in Germany, just one kilometer from the Wunstorf military airfield. Police are searching for further fragments and trying to determine the drone's owner.
German broadcaster NDR has reported that debris from a crashed drone was found near Lake Steinhude, close to Hanover. Police were alerted to the wreckage on Monday, September 14, and are now combing a large, uninhabited stretch of land in search of additional fragments.
According to the newspaper Bild, the crash site lies just one kilometer from the Wunstorf military airfield, where the German Air Force stations A400M military transport aircraft.
Authorities have not yet identified who owns the drone, and investigators are working to determine why it was flying in the area.
Part of a wider pattern
The incident follows a similar case in August 2026, when a drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig Airport near a Ukrainian An-124 transport aircraft that was carrying ammunition. It later emerged that multiple drones had been involved in that incident.
On September 1, German authorities formally accused Russia of attempting an act of sabotage at Leipzig Airport. The Kremlin has denied the allegations.
