Drone wreckage found near German military airbase
Germany's federal prosecutors are investigating after drone debris was discovered near the Wunstorf military airbase in Lower Saxony. A link to the August sabotage attempt at Leipzig/Halle airport has not been ruled out.
Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation after wreckage from a drone was found near the Wunstorf military airbase in the state of Lower Saxony. News agency dpa and the newspaper Bild reported the discovery on Friday, September 18.
The debris was found at Wunstorf a few days earlier. Security sources told dpa that it did not belong to a commercial drone model but to a specially built device that showed "certain similarities" to the drone used in the incident at Leipzig airport in August. This time, however, no traces of explosives have been found so far, according to Deutsche Welle.
Possible design similarity
Broadcaster NDR had earlier reported a "similarity in construction" between the two drones. According to that report, one component of the drone found at Wunstorf was produced with a 3D printer and is not available through regular retail channels.
A spokeswoman for Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office said investigators would examine whether there could be a connection between the incidents at Wunstorf and Leipzig.
Police are currently searching the area around the military airbase, hoping to find further wreckage from the downed drone. Local authorities say there is no danger to residents. The Wunstorf airbase is home to the Bundeswehr's A400M transport aircraft.
