Search for missing three-year-old Bella in Germany ends in tragedy - girl drowned in family's pool

Germany has been shaken by the death of three-year-old Bella, a case that has drawn sharp public criticism of police conduct. The girl, who had autism as well as vision and hearing impairments, went missing unnoticed from her home around midday on Wednesday, August 5.

Massive search effort

Because the child required constant care, police immediately launched a search that drew hundreds of rescuers, police officers, firefighters and local residents. Helicopters equipped with thermal cameras, drones and specially trained search dogs were deployed. Since children with autism often show a tendency to head toward bodies of water, rescuers focused heavily on nearby forests and lakes. The search continued into the night and resumed the following morning.

Body found in family's own pool

On Thursday morning, around 9:30, rescuers found the girl's lifeless body in a roughly four-meter-wide concrete pool right in her family's own backyard. The discovery sparked strong public criticism, as police had initially claimed the yard and pool had already been thoroughly searched multiple times by police and fire crews the previous evening.

On Friday, August 7, prosecutors and police officials issued a public apology, acknowledging that a fatal mistake had been made during the search and that the pool had not been fully checked.

Forensic results confirm drowning

On Friday afternoon, prosecutors in Kiel announced official forensic examination results confirming the worst fears: Bella died by drowning. Criminal police have ruled out any involvement of third parties in the child's death. Authorities have now opened a standard investigation to determine whether the parents or guardians failed to fulfill their duty of care, a routine legal check required in such tragic cases in Germany.
