Two suspicious drones spotted over German military base
Germany's armed forces reported two unidentified drones flying over a military base in Mechernich, with military police now investigating. The incident follows a Tuesday case at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where a drone rigged with explosives was found.
The German Bundeswehr announced on Friday that two suspicious drones were spotted flying over a military base in Mechernich, west of Bonn. The base's security control center reported the sighting on Thursday evening at around 10 p.m. local time, or 11 p.m. Latvian time. A Bundeswehr spokeswoman confirmed the report, adding that military police are now investigating the incident.
Related airport incident
The report follows another recent incident: on Tuesday evening, a drone equipped with explosives and a detonator was discovered near a transport aircraft bound for Ukraine at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The drone was shot down by an airport employee.
Air traffic at the airport was temporarily suspended following the discovery of the suspicious drone. As a result, a DHL cargo plane that had arrived from Marseille and was preparing to land was forced to take off again. The aircraft later collided with an object near the airport fence, which German media reported may have been another drone.
The two incidents point to growing concern in Germany over unidentified drones appearing near both military and civilian sites.
