German Intelligence Chief Warns of Risk of Conflict with Russia

The head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) has warned that Germany risks being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia. The intelligence chief also urged NATO members to remain alert to Moscow's so-called "little green men" — unmarked armed forces Russia has deployed in past conflicts.

The warning comes as Chancellor Friedrich Merz confronts a series of domestic challenges. In a recent speech, the chancellor sought to reassure anxious allies in Europe and Ukraine while urging Germans to stay the course against Moscow, cautioning that Russia's war machine could "turn against us" if left unchecked.

Merz's government is also contending with the rising popularity of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). His conservative party recently suffered its worst result in a regional election in postwar German history, while the AfD won its second regional election victory within two weeks. Despite the setback, Merz has vowed to remain in office as chancellor.

Compounding the pressure is the fight over economic reform. Merz maintains that his proposed reforms are necessary to revive Germany's economy and competitiveness, but the plans have proven unpopular with voters, leaving him to choose between redrafting them or defending them at political cost.
