German Dairy Farm with 300 Cows and Five Milking Robots Receives Award
The Hansen family's dairy farm in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, has received an honorary award from the state agricultural chamber for innovative animal husbandry. The farm keeps about 300 milking cows and five milking robots.
The Hansen family's dairy farm in Jadelund, in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, has received an honorary award for innovative animal husbandry from the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture. The farm has around 300 milking cows and five milking robots, according to a video report by the broadcaster SAT.1 Regional. The public broadcaster NDR has also covered the award.
Investment and automation
In 2022, the family invested several million euros to make the farm ready for the future. Friederike and Melf Hansen run the business together with their parents. Besides the five milking robots, the feeding of the cows with grass and maize silage is also automated.
The family relies on technical support in the barn and places emphasis on the welfare of its animals.
Focus on animal health
Melf Hansen puts particular weight on animal health. In his view, it is important that the cows walk well, are healthy and vital, and receive enough feed and water. Light and air are also crucial. "Only healthy animals give milk," Hansen says in the video report.
