German talent Mirza Catovic set to leave Stuttgart for Barcelona

FC Barcelona have agreed a deal to sign 19-year-old German midfielder Mirza Catovic from VfB Stuttgart. He will initially join the Catalan club's reserve team, Barcelona Atlètic, though Barcelona reportedly see him as a longer-term prospect for the first team.
Deal terms differ slightly between sources
Reports vary on the exact financial structure. Sky.de and Bulinews say Barcelona will pay a €600,000 loan fee, with a purchase obligation worth €5-10 million attached, the final figure depending on how many appearances Catovic makes for the first or second team. FussballTransfers.com, BILD and Goal.com, citing transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, instead describe a purchase option — rather than an obligation — worth around €3.5 million that Barcelona could exercise next year. The move was first reported by Spanish radio station Cadena SER and by Sky Germany. According to BILD, Catovic was expected to travel to Spain as early as Monday.
Why he is leaving Stuttgart
Catovic joined Stuttgart's youth academy four years ago and made 29 third-division appearances last season, impressing with strong performances. Even so, he never broke into the first team: BILD notes he was named in Stuttgart's Europa League squad seven times without ever playing a minute. Competition in midfield was fierce, with Angelo Stiller, captain Atakan Karazor, Spanish talent Chema Andrés and summer signing Grischa Prömel all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Catovic had already sought a move in the winter, when Hoffenheim and RB Salzburg reportedly offered around €4 million in January, though no transfer materialised at the time. This summer several top European clubs pursued him, including Club Brugge and RB Salzburg, as well as clubs from Italy and Belgium, before he ultimately opted for Barcelona.
A rising star for Germany
Catovic is a regular for Germany's U19 side and finished runner-up at this summer's European Championship, starting four of five matches for 90 minutes, including the final defeat to Spain (0-2). Goal.com describes him as a player who excels between the lines, with quality passing and the drive to carry the ball forward. Barcelona Atlètic's broader strategy is to blend La Masia academy graduates with young talents recruited from various football markets, aiming to build a reserve side capable of producing future first-team players.
