Wired vs. Wireless Keyboards: When Speed Actually Matters
Wireless keyboards generally lag behind wired ones due to Bluetooth latency, though 2.4GHz dongle connections come close to matching wired speeds. For most users the difference is unnoticeable, except in gaming where reaction time counts.
Even though Bluetooth is now built into nearly every device, both wired keyboards and high-end wireless-free models remain common on the market — gaming keyboards in particular often skip wireless options entirely. The reason comes down to performance: Bluetooth is known for latency that can desync audio or delay how quickly a keypress reaches a computer.
For everyday tasks like writing or editing spreadsheets, this delay is essentially unnoticeable. But in gaming, where fractions of a second matter, or for musicians using keyboards with digital audio workstations that require precise timing, the lag can be a real problem. Bluetooth latency can be as low as 8 milliseconds but sometimes exceeds 200 milliseconds — enough to make a game unplayable, especially considering human reaction time typically falls between 150 and 250 milliseconds.
2.4GHz as a middle ground
Many keyboards also offer a 2.4GHz connection via a small USB dongle. Unlike Bluetooth, there's no single unified 2.4GHz standard — each manufacturer implements its own version. This approach allows for higher bandwidth and lower latency, often just 0.5 to 1 millisecond, nearly matching wired connections at 0.3 to 1 millisecond.
Still, 2.4GHz has drawbacks. Each device typically needs its own dongle, consuming USB ports, and signal quality can suffer from interference caused by USB 3.0 ports or busy radio environments like cafes and airports. Some dongles also require a direct line of sight to the keyboard to work properly.
The bottom line: casual users who don't play reaction-time-sensitive games can pick whichever connection they prefer. But for guaranteed, consistent performance under any conditions, a wired connection remains the most dependable choice.
