Does Analogue 3D really turn retro games into 4K? Here's the truth

The Analogue 3D console uses FPGA technology to output Nintendo 64 games in 4K HDMI, but it doesn't add new detail to the original games — it enhances the picture rather than recreating it.

The Analogue 3D retro console is marketed with 4K appeal for classic Nintendo 64 games, but the term deserves a closer look. The device's HDMI output genuinely reaches 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, but most original N64 games were rendered at far lower resolutions — typically around 320 x 240, with some reaching 640 x 480. In literal terms, the console is a 4K device, but it cannot add detailed textures, geometry or animation that developers simply couldn't fit onto a mid-90s cartridge.

How the processing works

The Analogue 3D uses a scaling approach similar to what smart TVs have long used to fit lower-resolution content onto 4K panels, with one key difference: the image is processed before it reaches the television. The device can strip away the N64's characteristic blur filter, preserve its 32-bit color depth, adjust texture filtering and anti-aliasing, and optionally double a game's horizontal resolution. It also supports variable refresh rate, both NTSC and PAL cartridges, and output in either 4K or 1080p. Notably, the Original Display Modes feature, which recreates the look of old CRT displays complete with scanlines, only functions on a 4K screen.

Is it worth buying

Priced at $250, the console relies on an FPGA chip rather than software emulation to faithfully reproduce the N64's original operation. It supports physical cartridges and original controllers, is region-free, and includes four controller ports along with Bluetooth and USB support. According to Analogue, it is compatible with every original N64 game, though it isn't designed to run ROM files. For owners of original N64 cartridges who want a more polished way to play them on a modern 4K television, the Analogue 3D offers an accurate, convenient solution without the controversy that often accompanies modern remakes.
