Is the Apple TV 4K still worth buying after the price hike?

The Apple TV 4K price jumped from $129 to $199, raising questions about its value compared to cheaper alternatives.

The Apple TV 4K, a four-year-old product, recently saw a significant price increase due to the memory crisis and rising component costs. The 64GB model now costs $199 (up from $129), and the 128GB variant is $249 (up from $149). Despite its age, the device remains impressive with support for Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, a powerful A15 Bionic chip, and seamless integration with Apple's ecosystem (iPhone, Apple Arcade, Fitness+). However, at the new price, it's worth exploring alternatives.

For instance, the Google TV Streamer at $99 offers 4K/60fps, HDR support, and a user-friendly interface, though slightly slower. Amazon's Fire TV Cube ($140) and Fire TV Stick 4K Max ($60) are cheaper options with similar features but more ads. The Roku Ultra 2024 ($100) and NVIDIA Shield Android TV Pro ($200) are other alternatives, with the latter appealing to gamers via GeForce Now.

In conclusion, the Apple TV 4K is still a top choice for Apple loyalists who value ecosystem integration and picture quality. But with many comparable devices available at half the price, its value proposition is weaker than before. If you don't need the Apple ecosystem, you can save a lot by choosing a different streamer.
