Can a MacBook actually handle demanding video games?

Apple's in-house silicon has significantly improved Macs' ability to run modern video games, but several factors still matter before choosing a MacBook as a primary gaming machine. A notable performance gap with Windows PCs remains.

For years, Macs were considered a poor fit for gaming, hampered both by weaker hardware and by developers' reluctance to bring titles to macOS. That has started to change thanks to Apple's own M-series chips, which have substantially boosted processing power.

Current Mac models, such as MacBook Pro units built around the M5 chip, can natively run a growing number of popular titles, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, Dead Island 2, and Cyberpunk 2077. The list of macOS-compatible games keeps expanding, with more titles launching alongside their Windows counterparts.

A workaround for unported titles

For games without an official Mac version, Apple offers a tool called the Gaming Porting Toolkit, which translates Windows games for macOS in real time. Although built primarily for developers, anyone can use it. Testing it with GTA V on an M4 Pro MacBook Pro produced a steady 60 frames per second at high graphics settings, with only occasional minor glitches.

For checking a specific game's compatibility, the community-run site MacGamingDB compiles performance data for thousands of titles across different Mac models, saving users from downloading large files just to find a game doesn't work well.

Which model makes sense

For serious gaming, the MacBook Pro is the better choice — even the base configuration with an M5 Pro chip and 24GB of RAM handles most modern games smoothly, while the M5 Max chip offers even more power. The MacBook Air and similar lower-tier models, lacking a cooling fan and a stronger processor, are less suited to demanding titles.

For dedicated gamers, a Windows PC generally offers better value at a similar price, while cloud gaming services such as GeForce NOW or Xbox Cloud Gaming provide another alternative that sidesteps hardware limitations entirely.
