Are older MacBooks still worth buying in 2026?
Experts advise that when buying a used MacBook in 2026, software support matters more than a low price — Apple Silicon models remain a safe choice, while Intel-based ones should generally be avoided.
When shopping for a used MacBook in 2026, the key question shouldn't be how cheap the laptop is, but whether its performance and software support justify the price. A MacBook with an Apple-designed M-series chip comfortably handles everyday computing and, crucially, keeps receiving macOS updates.
Apple Silicon versus Intel models
Apple began transitioning to its own chips in 2020 and stopped selling Intel-based MacBooks in 2021. The upcoming macOS 27, dubbed Golden Gate, will be the first release that won't run on Intel Macs at all. Apple's compatibility list for macOS 27 includes MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with Apple silicon dating back to 2020.
For MacBooks released before the M-series era, buyers can expect only additional security patches for the last supported macOS version and little else. Still, even a basic M1 MacBook Air remains capable of browsing, streaming and most everyday laptop tasks, and such units — especially refurbished ones — can still be found at reasonable prices.
Software support matters more than age
Apple currently continues issuing security updates for several macOS versions, including Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15 and Sonoma 14, but macOS 27 Golden Gate will be the first update limited to Apple silicon devices. Buying a MacBook already excluded from the latest macOS is therefore risky unless the buyer plans to keep usage very basic.
Before purchasing a used MacBook, it's worth confirming the exact model identifier and checking the macOS compatibility list, along with the battery's cycle count, and testing the keyboard, display, ports, camera, Wi-Fi and speakers. Buyers generally get the best value from previous-generation models rather than the cheapest option available. Apple Certified Refurbished products come with a standard one-year warranty and can save up to 15 percent compared to new models. Overall, an M1 MacBook or newer is worth buying at the right price, while Intel-based models should only be considered for limited or short-term use.
