Are you plugging your Fire TV Stick into the wrong HDMI port?

Not all HDMI ports are equal: Fire TV Stick works best in an HDMI 2.0 port, while 2.1 ports should be reserved for gaming consoles.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick is a handy device that turns a regular TV into a smart one. However, choosing the right HDMI port matters for optimal performance.

Modern TVs come with a mix of HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 ports, some also featuring ARC or eARC. HDMI 2.1 offers higher bandwidth (up to 48 Gbps), ideal for 4K/8K video and high-frame-rate gaming, while HDMI 2.0 supports up to 18 Gbps.

The Fire TV Stick HD (1080p/60Hz) and 4K models (4K/60Hz) work perfectly with HDMI 2.0, as their requirements do not exceed its capabilities. Even HDR formats like Dolby Vision and HDR10+, as well as Dolby Atmos audio, are fully supported by HDMI 2.0. Therefore, it is safe to plug the Fire TV Stick into an HDMI 2.0 port.

However, if you own current-generation gaming consoles like Xbox Series X, PS5, or PS5 Pro, it is advisable to reserve HDMI 2.1 ports for them to take advantage of 4K/120Hz and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). The Fire TV Stick does not benefit from these features.

Additionally, ARC/eARC ports are designed for transmitting audio to soundbars or receivers. If your TV has only one such port, keep it free for audio equipment rather than the Fire TV Stick.

In summary, while the Fire TV Stick works in any HDMI port, it is best to use an HDMI 2.0 port and leave 2.1 and ARC/eARC ports for devices that benefit more from them.
