More than 200 evacuated after overnight fire at English seaside hotel

A large fire broke out overnight at the Grand Burstin Hotel in the seaside town of Folkestone, in southeast England, forcing more than 200 people to evacuate. Kent Fire and Rescue Service said the alarm was raised at around 01:06 local time, prompting a response of 26 fire engines.
By 08:30, the fire service reported that 10 engines remained on scene, working to extinguish remaining hotspots. Investigators believe the fire started in the building's basement, though the exact cause has not yet been determined. No fire-related injuries have been reported so far.
Support for those affected
Folkestone and Hythe District Council has opened a welfare centre at the nearby Three Hills Sports Park to assist evacuated guests and staff. Residents living close to the hotel have been advised to stay away from the area and to keep their windows and doors closed. The council said it is supporting all emergency services involved in the response and their efforts to bring people to safety.
A spokesperson for Britannia Hotels Group, which operates the Grand Burstin, said the company was taking immediate steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of guests and staff. The spokesperson added that emergency services were on site and that the company was fully cooperating with authorities to support those affected and assist the ongoing response.
