More than 200 companies sign Trump's 'pledge' to protect consumers from data center price rises

The White House has announced that more than 200 entities, including major utility companies, data center developers, and 23 Republican governors, have signed President Trump's Ratepayer Protection Pledge. The commitment aims to shield ordinary American consumers from cost increases driven by data center construction. However, the pledge is non-binding, and none of the participants are legally obligated to take any action to protect consumers from the effects of the AI boom. There is also no penalty for breaking the pledge.

When the pledge was first announced in March, major tech companies including Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon were among the first to sign. They promised to "build, bring, or buy the new generation resources and electricity needed to satisfy their new energy demands" without passing costs to consumers. The pledge also includes covering the cost of power infrastructure upgrades that utility companies may need to supply energy, instead of letting those costs be passed on to consumers.

The White House claims the pledge now covers 80% of all power delivered to homes and businesses in the US due to the utility companies that have signed on. It reportedly protects 263 million Americans from the economic impact of data centers. Whether this initiative will truly protect people from data center costs remains to be seen. The National Energy Assistance Directors Association estimates that Americans will spend about 10.5% more for electricity from June through September this year compared to the same period in 2025, as demand increases.
