In the Cēsis municipality, a fire broke out in July at the historic Vaive school building, leaving five families who lived there without a home within just a few hours. Among those affected is Ilona Einika's family, which includes six children.
As a result of the fire, the building no longer has a roof. Household appliances and children's belongings damaged in the blaze are now scattered outside near the building, illustrating the scale of the destruction. Inside, however, an exercise machine has survived — one that had been helping the family's five-year-old son learn to walk.
A family left without shelter
The fire affected not only the Einika family but four other families who also lived in the historic school building. All five families were suddenly left without housing, with some of their belongings destroyed or rendered unusable by the fire.
The building's condition after the fire suggests that returning to live there will not be possible in the near future, as the missing roof leaves the interior exposed to the elements.
