Latvia's Economy Minister Viktors Valainis met on Wednesday, August 19, with representatives of the supervisory board and management of telecom company Tet, as well as leadership from state asset manager Possessor, to hear the information available on a cyber incident affecting the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD). Following the meeting, the minister instructed Tet to immediately carry out an audit.

Valainis has requested that Tet's board prepare and submit, by the end of this week, comprehensive information on the actions taken within the company's area of responsibility related to the incident. The report must also assess where and at what level responsibility lay for the circumstances that allowed the cyberattack to occur.

Minister's comments

"Right now, the most important thing is to obtain an accurate, fact-based picture of what happened," Valainis said, adding that it must be clear what exactly occurred, why it was possible, and who was responsible. He noted that decisions on further action can only be made once the facts have been fully established.

The minister also stressed that in situations affecting information systems and services of national importance, what is needed is not only a swift response to the incident itself, but also a clear determination of responsibility and conclusions on measures needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Once Tet's detailed report is received, the ministry will evaluate the information provided and decide on next steps.
