The Ukrainian government formally approved Tymur Tkachenko's appointment as head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration on July 22. The decision was announced by government representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk.

Tkachenko previously headed the Kyiv City Military Administration (KMVA), but was dismissed from that post by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 16. In May, several Kyiv media outlets reported that Tkachenko had submitted a resignation letter, but he denied this, suggesting that “some political teams with shock-and-awe tactics” were behind the reports.

Tensions with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko date back to April 2025, when the Kyiv City Council passed a resolution that Tkachenko argued limited his powers as KMVA head. He later filed a lawsuit challenging the expansion of Klitschko's authority. In October 2025, Tkachenko complained that the mayor's absence prevented him from convening a meeting of the Defense Council.

Tkachenko now takes over administration of the Kyiv region, overseeing civilian governance and coordination with military structures in the area.
