Latvian Government to Consider Introducing Immigration Quotas for Third-Country Nationals

The Latvian government is expected to make a decision in the near future on implementing recommendations from a parliamentary investigation commission in the field of immigration. According to Latvian Television, one of the key proposals is to evaluate the possibility of setting quotas for third-country nationals entering Latvia. This would mean limiting the total number of arrivals from outside the European Union.

Furthermore, the proposal suggests imposing quotas not only on a general level but also for specific countries or regions. In other words, Latvia could introduce differentiated quotas for citizens of particular nations, depending on the situation and needs.

These proposals stem from the work of the parliamentary investigation commission, which was established to assess migration policy and its impact on Latvia's security and economy. The commission has prepared several recommendations aimed at improving immigration control and aligning it with national interests.

The government has not yet made a final decision, but in the coming weeks, it plans to consider possible changes to immigration regulations. If quotas are approved, they could take effect as early as next year.
