Artillery procurement decision revisited

Latvia's government has reviewed decisions made during the period when Andris Sprūds was responsible for them, changing course on the planned acquisition of new artillery for the National Armed Forces. According to information obtained by the LETA news agency, the government has abandoned plans to purchase the Swedish-made 155mm wheeled artillery system known as "Archer".

Czech-made alternative chosen

Instead, Latvia intends to buy self-propelled howitzers manufactured in the Czech Republic, a cheaper option compared to the Swedish "Archer" systems. The decision suggests that cost considerations have become a key factor in selecting equipment to strengthen the country's artillery units.

155mm-caliber artillery systems are an important component of strengthening national defense capabilities, and the choice of supplier will influence future procurement policy for military equipment. Specific details about the value of the new contract, delivery timelines, or the number of units have not yet been made public.

The government's decision reflects an effort to revisit previously made defense procurement choices and seek more cost-effective solutions without abandoning the goal of strengthening military capability.
