The main Rail Baltica line will still be built as planned from Latvia's southern to northern border, but by mid-September responsible agencies must decide which project requirements can be dropped to deliver a functional railway the country can actually build.

Latvia's main Rail Baltica railway line will be constructed at its full planned scope, connecting the country's southern and northern borders, Transport Minister Rihards Kozlovskis and Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said following a meeting of the thematic committee overseeing the Rail Baltica project's implementation.

Cutting back requirements

At the same time, the officials said that responsible ministries and agencies have until mid-September to determine which requirements attached to the project can be dropped. The goal is to end up with a functional, operational railway line that the state is realistically able to build.

According to the minister and the prime minister, the project's requirements need to be reduced to a level that is acceptable and achievable, while still delivering a working railway.
