Valka teens to build teamwork skills through new project

A new social-skills initiative has begun in the Valka municipality, aimed at helping schoolchildren develop teamwork abilities and a stronger sense of belonging. The project, called "Es, mēs – kopā" ("Me, We – Together"), is run by the association "Atbalsts ģimenēm" (Support for Families) together with the Valka municipal government and Valka's Jānis Cimze Gymnasium.

Around 75 eighth-grade students are taking part. Through various practical and creative activities, they will work on communication and cooperation skills, decision-making, problem-solving, and self-confidence. Project coordinator Ilze Leicāne says that learning and experiencing new situations together helps create a more inclusive and united school environment.

First activities already held

On September 2, students took part in a team-building day featuring a "Trading Game" organized with the association "Piedzīvojuma gars" (Spirit of Adventure), working in teams to find joint solutions. A similar activity is planned for the project's conclusion, allowing participants to reflect on their experience and growth.

The project also includes improvisational theatre sessions, giving students a safe setting to express thoughts and emotions, as well as a game also titled "Es, mēs – kopā", to be held multiple times in small groups involving local associations and community representatives. These activities aim to deepen understanding of cooperation and civic participation.

Cooperation with non-governmental organizations is another key element, helping students understand how their own ideas and actions can influence school and community life.

The project runs from September 1 this year through June 30, 2027, with total funding of 6,700 euros. It is financed through the "School in the Community" initiative, implemented under the European Social Fund Plus programme.
