Valka agrees to begin financial stabilisation process

The local government of Valka in Latvia has acknowledged it cannot manage its debt obligations on its own, and its council will consider starting a financial stabilisation process. This would place the municipality's work under the supervision of the Finance Ministry.

The local government of Valka, in Latvia, has been forced to admit that it cannot cope with its debt obligations by itself. The municipal council will therefore consider whether to start a financial stabilisation process, Latvian Television reports.

What it means

If such a process begins, the work of the local authorities is supervised by the Finance Ministry, the national body responsible for state financial policy in Latvia. In practice, Valka would lose part of its independence and operate under the ministry's oversight.

The ministry's assessment

The Finance Ministry describes the situation in Valka as a financial crisis and, in the Latvian context, an emergency. That wording points to how serious the municipality's financial position is considered to be.

The source does not say when the council will take up the matter, how large the debts are, or exactly how the ministry's supervision will be organised.
