Valka to hold Forest Day and open new rest spot
On September 9, Valka will host the educational event “Forest Day 2026,” teaching residents about forest care and restoration while unveiling a newly built rest area, “Līras kalniņš.”
Next Wednesday, September 9, at 10 a.m., the Mežaparks sports ground in Valka will host “Forest Day 2026,” an event aimed at educating residents about the importance of forests and how they are managed and restored. The event was confirmed by Toms Simtiņš, head of the Valka municipality's Development, Projects and Tourism Department.
The program opens with an educational lecture on forest management and restoration work, as well as tourism and recreation opportunities in forests. The lecture will be given by Arnis Čams, production manager of forestry at the state joint-stock company “Latvijas Valsts meži.”
A new recreation spot
An hour later, participants will tour environmental features created in Mežaparks, including the newly built nature site “Līras kalniņš.” Attendees will learn about forest management principles, watch demonstrations of young stand maintenance, tree thinning and forest restoration, and take an educational walk through the Mežaparks area.
As part of the event, the municipality is carrying out several additional activities: improving accessibility, leveling ground and clearing vegetation. Three wooden benches are being installed around the “Līras” tree, creating a small rest area and viewing site called “Līras kalniņš.” Two staircases are also being built to ensure safe and convenient access to the nature site. Construction work using wood began in early September.
A similar Forest Day event took place in Valka last year as well, with students from Valka's Jānis Cimze Gymnasium taking part.
