New PE teacher at Valka gymnasium promises to be friendly but strict

Valka's Jānis Cimze Gymnasium has started the new school year with a new physical education teacher, 23-year-old Māris Parts, who will also assist homeroom teacher Anda Kušķe with the 7th grade class. He spoke about his first day during the Knowledge Day ceremony held on September 1 in the shared center of the twin towns of Valka and Valga.

Parts lives in the neighboring municipality, in Rūjiena, part of Valmiera municipality, but will now commute to work in Valka. He learned about the teaching position through a job listing and decided to apply. This marks his first job.

Family influence and ongoing studies

The new teacher explained that sport has long been his passion, largely influenced by his father, who also worked as a physical education teacher. Parts admitted he was not the most diligent student during his own school years but became more responsible as he grew older. He also plans to finish his studies at the Sports Academy, which he has not yet completed.

First impressions and challenges

Parts spoke positively of his new colleagues, describing them as welcoming and warm. He noted that homeroom teacher Anda Kušķe agreed to mentor him, which he considers valuable support, since children of that age require a particular approach.

After getting acquainted with the gymnasium building on Ausekļa Street, Parts said the school's facilities are generally good, though it lacks an outdoor sports field. He expressed confidence that this shortcoming can be addressed, noting that the school grounds have ample surrounding space.

Asked about his approach to students, Parts said he intends to be friendly, but also strict, to prevent classes from becoming undisciplined.
