Valka municipality lacks funds and workers to mow overgrown garden plots
Gardeners in the Valka municipality complain that plots of land next to their tended garden allotments belong to the municipality and have long gone unmown, spreading weeds onto neighboring plots.
August is typically the month when garden allotment holders harvest the fruits of their labor. But this year, gardeners in the Valka municipality have also been contending with an unwelcome and persistent problem: fighting weeds that spread from neglected land nearby.
Several diligent gardeners have contacted local media to report that plots adjacent to their well-tended allotments have remained unmown and overgrown for a long time.
Land belongs to the municipality
According to the gardeners, the neglected plots in question belong to the Valka municipal government. Weeds from these untended areas spread freely onto the surrounding cultivated garden plots, making the gardeners' fight against weeds an ongoing struggle.
The report indicates that the municipality lacks both the funding and the workforce needed to regularly mow these territories.
The situation reflects a broader challenge faced by many local governments across Latvia: limited resources make it difficult to ensure regular upkeep of all municipally owned land, creating inconvenience for residents who maintain their own garden plots nearby.
