Valmiera knitting group makes warm items for premature babies and care home residents
Members of the Valmiera initiative group “Čaklo bitīšu klubs” (Busy Bees Club) used municipal co-funding to knit socks, hats and other items for Vidzeme Hospital and the Valmiera care home. Two knitting workshops were also held for seniors.

An initiative group called “Čaklo bitīšu klubs” (Busy Bees Club) in Valmiera municipality, Latvia, has completed a community project titled “Knitwear for the Valmiera care home and premature babies”. Club members made warm knitted items by hand for premature babies at Vidzeme Hospital and for residents of the Valmiera care home. The Valmiera municipality contributed 300 euros in co-funding.
What was made
Using yarn bought with the project funds, members knitted at home. For the premature babies they made booties, socks, trousers, sweaters and small comfort toys. For care home residents they produced warm socks, hats and mittens. The items were delivered to Vidzeme Hospital and to the care home at both of its addresses, Rīgas iela 55 and Kauguru iela 3.
Workshops for seniors
The aim went beyond supplying warm clothing. Two knitting workshops were held at the care home to encourage seniors' creative activity and help them learn new skills.
The first took place on 25 September at Rīgas iela 55, where five participants were introduced to making hats on a knitting machine. The second, on 2 October at Kauguru iela 3, drew 12 participants, who learned about different knitting options and ways of making hats with a machine.
Sessions held on the premises matter for seniors who, because of age or limited mobility, cannot always take part in activities away from where they live. The skills gained can help them keep knitting independently.
Benefits for the knitters
The project also benefited the group's members. They were able to spend free time usefully and complete work of value to the community. The chance to help strengthened their belief that their skills and effort are needed and appreciated.
