Valmiera beat RFS reserves to move top of Latvian First League
Valmiera defeated RFS reserves 2-1 at home and took over first place in the Latvian First League. Metta's 2-2 draw with Riga-2 also helped the leaders' position.
Valmiera beat RFS reserves 2-1 at home on Saturday and climbed to the top of the First League standings. The home side got goals from captain Fraj Kairmanī and Brazilian Gleilson Lopes, while Baldē pulled one back for RFS-2.
RFS reserves had Rihards Matrevics in goal. Matrevics is a Latvia national team goalkeeper who won the Virslīga title with Valmiera in 2022. He returned to Latvia from Czech Republic this summer and joined RFS, but after unsuccessful matches he has been playing for the reserves.
Valmiera's move to first place was also helped by Metta's 2-2 draw with Riga-2. Six minutes before the end, Kevin Cēsnieks missed a penalty that would have given Metta the win. Both leaders have 38 points, but Valmiera are above because they beat Metta 2-1 away in early May.
Leevon PPK remain third after a 2-1 home win over Rēzekne. The visitors pulled one back in the 80th minute, but a minute later Kristiāns Valeniks received a second yellow card. It was Leevon PPK's third consecutive win, while Valmiera have won six in a row.
Meanwhile, RFS have recently signed Portuguese winger Baldē and Croatian forward Korač. Transfermarkt estimates the transfers at about 200,000 euros and 125,000 euros respectively. Baldē scored in this match; Matrevics and Odišarija also featured for RFS-2.
