Valmiera Theatre Returns to "Skroderdienas Silmačos" Without Preconceived Stereotypes
After 22 years, Valmiera Theatre has revived Rūdolfs Blaumanis's play "Skroderdienas Silmačos" (Sewing Days in Silmači), directed by Elmārs Seņkovs, premiering on June 12. The director offers a fresh perspective, aiming to remove common stereotypes and deepen character understanding.

Valmiera Theatre has brought back Rūdolfs Blaumanis's classic play "Skroderdienas Silmačos" after a 22-year hiatus. The new production, directed by Elmārs Seņkovs, premiered on June 12. The creative team has developed an unconventional yet insightful interpretation of this classic work.
Director Elmārs Seņkovs decided to thoroughly examine Blaumanis's text to rediscover the characters and events. He seeks to strip away typical characterizations and reveal what gives depth to the roles. Seņkovs notes that the provocation lies in simply rereading the play and presenting a different viewpoint.
The production masterfully blends drama, melodrama, and situational comedy. The director highlights how the "Silmači" household accurately reflects contemporary Latvian society. The story unfolds just before Midsummer, with wedding preparations, the arrival of tailors, a burst faucet, and a bee attack, but this new interpretation offers a fresh look at the events and characters.
