Valmiera Technical School has started the 2026/2027 academic year with notable recognition, having been included in the Ata Kronvalds Foundation's 2026 "Great Owl" ranking of top schools. The ranking evaluates student achievements in national olympiads, scientific research conferences and other academic competitions. Notably, Valmiera Technical School is the only vocational education institution, or technical school, to make this year's list.

Director's comments

School director Vineta Melngārša said the ranking placement confirms the institution's competitiveness among both general secondary and vocational schools in Latvia. She noted that students regularly take part in national olympiads in mathematics, computer science and foreign languages, as well as Latvian and European professional skills competitions, where they have won prize-winning places.

According to Melngārša, such results would not be possible without teachers' dedicated work and professional approach, which is why the school continues to develop staff competencies. At the same time, the institution is systematically modernising its equipment and facilities so students can develop skills in up-to-date classrooms and laboratories.

Stable position despite demographic shifts

Despite ongoing demographic changes affecting overall student numbers nationwide, Valmiera Technical School has maintained a stable position among young people choosing vocational education. This year, the school enrolled 210 new students.

The institution views its inclusion in the ranking as an important recognition of the joint efforts of students, teachers and staff in ensuring educational quality and developing young people's talents.
