The Latvian state plans to take over, free of charge, the Juniper Reserve (Kadiķu liegums) of more than 60 hectares at Gudenieki from Kuldīga municipality. This follows from a draft government order submitted for coordination on the legal acts portal. The property lies within the "Gudenieki" nature reserve, part of the European Union's Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

Under the draft, the transfer would be carried out in accordance with the law on the alienation of public property and the law "On Specially Protected Nature Territories". After the takeover, the property would pass into the possession of the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development.

How the land will be used

The order states that the ministry will use the property to carry out the functions of the Nature Conservation Agency.

Value and municipal decision

In December last year, the cadastral value of the property was 42,308 euros. In September, the Kuldīga municipal council backed transferring the property to the state without compensation.

Protected natural values

Several habitats of European Union importance have been identified in the area. They include juniper stands in grasslands and heaths, as well as species-rich pastures and grazed meadows.
